The wonderful matchbox picture above is from a Combray (AKA Khambhat) match factory in India. The Hindi phrase at the top says “cow stamp”—this is their trademark.
While Hindus of course refrain from eating beef, The Bountiful Cow’s name was chosen in 2004 with the not dissimilar view that the cow, always giving and feeding, is the ideal symbol of life and the support of life.
This sacred cow image replaces a photo found on the web of a woman-- whom we learned was Colleen Patrick-Goudreau, Author, Speaker, and Joyful Vegan— who was charmingly caressing the head of a reclining bull. We have sent her our mortified apologies for our ignorance about the picture’s source, and have ordered her latest book, Vegan’s Daily Companion, for our library.
We also explained that The Bountiful Cow is not indifferent to vegan concerns, as many of our diners are aware, and our menu includes fine vegan dishes as well as animal ones!
